Hyperthyroidism, a condition caused by an overactive thyroid gland resulting in the production and secretion of excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. There are many causes of hyperthyroidism, the most common being Graves' disease, which is triggered by an overabundance of a specific antibody in the body, the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibody (TRAb). Hyperthyroidism is more prevalent in women than in men, and young women are more likely to develop Graves' disease, while older adults are more likely to develop multinodular toxic goiter. Common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include agitation, irritability, tachycardia, fatigue, fear of heat, excessive sweating, weight loss, and hyper appetite, etc. Hyperthyroidism is not contagious. In addition, some patients develop ophthalmoplegia with protruding eyes, periodic paralysis or muscle weakness is present, and some women suffer from severe vomiting of pregnancy.
